When I try to preview a file using the "Separation Preview" feature in Adobe Illustrator CS4 and later sometimes it does not see any colors. All options are grayed out.
There is a "bug" in this great new feature that we hope Adobe fixes soon.
Here is a work around:
In many cases switching the color mode makes the feature operate. It does not matter to a screen printer if the program is in RGB or CMYK mode, especially when using spot colors or imported (placed) images that contain spot colors.
From the File Menu choose "Document Color Mode" and switch from RGB to CMYK or CMYK to RGB. This usually starts the feature working.
